Severe weather can pose a serious threat to trees, especially those that are already weakened or unstable. High winds, heavy rain, and saturated soil can cause compromised trees to uproot or break apart, creating dangerous situations for people and property. Identifying early warning signs of instability can help you take action before a storm hits. At PCR Tree Service, we can identify hazardous trees and safely remove them before disaster strikes. Here are four signs that a tree may be at increased risk of crashing down in severe weather. Cracks in Trunk A trunk with deep cracks, large cavities, or visible splits is structurally compromised. These defects weaken the tree’s ability to support its own weight and withstand external pressure from high winds. In severe weather, the stress on the damaged trunk can lead to sudden failure, causing major branches—or even the entire tree—to collapse. A professional should inspect any tree with trunk damage to assess its stability and recommend whether removal is necessary. Leaning or Shifting One of the most obvious indications of a potential hazard is a tree that leans noticeably to one side. Some trees grow naturally at an angle, but a sudden or increasing lean suggests instability in the root system or trunk. If the lean is accompanied by cracks in the soil or exposed roots, the tree may be losing its grip on the ground. During strong winds or heavy rain, these trees are far more likely to topple over, especially if the soil becomes waterlogged. Root Damage Roots anchor a tree to the ground and draw in vital nutrients. If they become damaged by construction, soil compaction, or disease, the tree’s stability is severely compromised. Fungal growth near the base, soft or spongy soil, or exposed and broken roots are all warning signs of root decay. In storms, trees with weakened root systems can easily uproot, posing a significant hazard to nearby structures and power lines. Signs of Internal Decay Fungi growing on the trunk or branches often indicate internal decay, even if the exterior appears intact. Similarly, hollow areas or cavities within the trunk weaken the tree’s core strength. In severe weather, the combination of internal rot and wind pressure can cause the tree to snap or fall unexpectedly. If you notice these signs, it’s important to have a professional evaluate the tree’s condition before the next major storm.
